After scoring just two free throws the first quarter Saturday night in Washburn, the Center-Stanton Wildcats forged a comeback the second half of
the District 10 title game against Underwood. Four points was as close as the Wildcats would get, though, as the second-seeded Comets’ defense cracked down
the last quarter to vault the Comets to the title with a 48-34 victory. Underwood senior Maggie Eng spearheaded the Comets’ rally with about 2:30 left in the game, nailing a three-pointer then following up with a lay-up to give the Comets the 44-32 goahead with 2:13 remaining in the game. From there, the Comets used the free throw line to hold
off the Wildcats, with Ashtyn Smith counting a pair of freebies and Taysha Snyder adding a couple more down the stretch. The win pits the Comets against District 9’s fourth seed,
Standing Rock, in the Region 5 tournament opening-round game Monday at 6 p.m. at the Mandan High School. The Comets faced all of the District 9 teams that are advancing to regionals, except Standing Rock, noted Underwood Head Coach Gary Ballard – so he was at Monday’s District 9 finals to check out the Comets’ first opponent.
