Comets split in opening girls hoops action

The Underwood Comets will be looking to take a little better care of the ball and find a rhythm for their offense this week, after splitting their opening two girls basketball games of the season.
The home-standing Comets bumped off Hettinger-Scranton last Friday night in the McLean County Shootout by the score of 44-28, then fell to Kidder County 58-34 in more shootout action Saturday at Turtle Lake.
"We’re going to take care of the ball and find a rhythm on offense," said Underwood Coach Toni Cottingham. "Those are the biggest things we’re going to hit, and physicalness – making sure that we’re coming out physical and in control of what we can control."
In opening-season action Friday, the Comets jumped to a 10-point first-quarter lead, 14-4, then put the icing on the cake the final stanza, allowing Hettinger-Scranton just two points the last eight minutes.
Brooke Weisenberger came off the bench to score 14 points to pace the Comets in scoring, while Erin Dammann led the defensive effort with eight steals.
"Her long arms with her defense, she’s very intimidating," said Cottingham.
