Comets notch opening season wins

The Underwood Comets used their defense to up-end their opponents at the McLean County Shootout Friday and Saturday night, not allowing the Beulah Miners any points the first stanza on their way to a 44-32 win Saturday night. That came after the Comets knocked off White Shield by the score of 55-25 Friday night.
In both games, Underwood Head Coach Toni Cottingham credited her team’s defense for shutting down the opponents and picking up some fast-break points.
"Defense, and turning it into offense," said Cottingham, referring to the Comets’ knack for turning a turnover into a quick bucket.
"We had quite a few opportunities, just by having that transition of being able to do some deflecting and forcing some turnovers," said Cottingham.
White Shield was pegged for 43 turnovers in Friday’s game, while Beulah gave up the ball 42 times.
The Comets had their share of turnovers, too, pointed out Cottingham, but the majority of them came when the reserves were on the floor.
