After an eye-opening five-game shootout against Washburn in the first round of the district tournament, it looked like the Underwood Comets were able to compete with the best. The loss to Washburn was followed up by a loss to Wilton- Wing Miners to put the Comets in fourth place in the district. Garrison-Max was the only team to not advance to the regional tournament from the district. By catching the last spot at districts, it put the Comets against the No. 1 seed Flasher Bulldogs. Comets fought hard and nearly took the second set but failed to pull it off. They lost to the fast and powerful Bulldogs 3-0. In the game against Washburn, the Comets played tough ball. They kept in close every game. “I was so proud of the girls,” head coach Mary Hefta said of the Comet team. “It isn’t easy to come back after losing games one and two and we came back with pride and confidence to win games three and four.” Game five is the one that kills. The importance of coming out with momentum was something the Comets know all about but they could not finish on top. The Comets lost 15-11.
