Comets loaded with seniors, skills

Underwood Head Volleyball Coach Mary Hefta is looking forward to seeing what all of her players’ off-season training has done for them when they head to the court for their first game next Friday (Aug. 30) at New Town. Most of the players returning to this year’s squad were regularly playing league volleyball this summer, and a lot attended at least one volleyball camp in addition to the camp she put on in Underwood. Hefta is thinking that extra work through the summer will go a long way in pushing the Comets toward their goal of advancing to the second round of the regional volleyball tournament this year. “Over half of the girls played all summer,” said Hefta. “I’m just seeing more and more interest and love of the sport.” And the players are really tuned into what the players are doing. There’s a real team “cohesiveness,” particularly with the veteran players. “These seniors have been together since seventh grade, now we’re getting this whole six years where they’ve played together.” said Hefta. “They know the game, and they’re so willing to learn new things. They’re always showing improvement.”
