The Underwood Comets captured third place in the Region 5 basketball tournament last Thursday in Mandan with a 51-41 over Wilton, bouncing back from a tough semifinal loss Tuesday to eventual region champ Shiloh by the score of 67-32.
While it may often be hard to get up for a third-place regional game, that wasn’t the case for the Comets, who took the opportunity of playing Wilton-Wing again as an opportunity to avenge their district tournament championship game loss, which they did – it just took awhile to let the vengeance-seeking aspect to kick in.
The Comets led by a slim one-point lead at the half, but used a strong third quarter, outscoring Wilton-Wing 18-10 to take a nine-point lead into the final stanza, a lead which the Comets would never relinquish.
"It was nice to have the opportunity to avenge our district championship loss," commented Underwood coach Toni Cottingham. "Playing for third place in the region is a tough game to play in. The girls are motivated and energized to play those first two games because they know that they have a chance to make that championship game. When you lose that semifinal game, it’s tough to re-focus, especially with seniors."
