The Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky Trojans had their third-set comeback stopped short Thursday night as the home-standing Underwood Comets rallied to take the third set of their Region 5 match-up, taking the match by the score of 3-0.
The Comets dominated in the two opening sets, winning by scores of 25-16 and 25-14 before the Trojans came back in the final set, leading 15-7 before the Comets started whittling away at the lead.
The Comets took their first lead of the set when Bailey Gross served up the 18th and 19th points. From there it was volleys back and forth and trading points before Underwood’s Emma Brunelle served up the final winning point giving the Comets the 25-22 win.
Underwood Coach Jordyn Singer credited the win with the Comets’ readiness for the big rivalry game.
“I thought we came out and played with a lot of energy,” said Singer. “It seems like we play at a whole other level when it comes to the rivalries. The girls came out ready to play.”
Senior hitter Taysha Snyder led the offensive onslaught with 13 kills followed by fellow senior hitter Milah Kibbel’s four kills.
