The Underwood Comet boys’ basketball team played their first game of the season as they hosted Center-Stanton on Monday night. The Comets took the tip and started strong with a quick basket by junior Nick Lee. The Wildcats had many second chance rebounds but were unable to capitalize. Sophomore Jeremy Wirtz napped the next basket for the Comets to go up 4-0 early in the first quarter. Fellow sophomore Carlos Hernandez hit a 10-foot jumper from the right side and the Comets jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The Wildcats scored next but the Comets continued to keep the lead in the first quarter with a three-pointer from Lee. Junior Matt Landenberger showed some great passing skills to feed Lee for another bucket, then drove the lane for two, extending the Comet lead 17-9 at the end of the first quarter. At the beginning of the second quarter the Wildcats had several turnovers and the Comets needed to capitalize on them. The sweet spot on the floor in the second quarter was just right off the top of the key where both Wirtz and junior Dillon Aldinger nailed three-pointers.
