Comets come close

The Underwood Comets almost pulled a rabbit out of a hat Monday night, forcing District 10 top seed Garrison into overtime in the Region 5 qualifier before falling by the score of 75-72 in Washburn.
Underwood coach Steve Cottingham, though proud his team was able to wipe out a 16-point deficit and force the game into overtime, summed up his feelings, saying, "This was by far the best effort we’ve put out all year, and it was nice to see them play with that passion, but it never feels good to lose by three."
After trailing 39-24 the first half, the Comets switched up their offense, started putting more pressure on the perimeter, and started fighting their way back.
They outscored the Troopers 23-17 in the third stanza, and the teams battled through the fourth, when with 37.8 seconds remaining in regulation, Garrison’s Dominic Ruhland seemingly put the game out of reach when he knocked down a free throw to go up 64-59.
But on their next possession, the Comets quickly got the ball to their end, where Nevada Sorenson tossed in one of his four three-pointers on the night, cutting the gap to 64-62.
