The Comets pulled out the win in the game that mattered this past week, topping Standing Rock 3-0 Thursday to clinch a berth in this week’s Region 5 volleyball tournament in New Salem. Earlier in the week the Comets lost a heart-breaker to Washburn in a match that went three, the Cardinals taking the final match by the score of 15-13.
Thursday night’s match against the Warriors of Standing Rock saw senior Lauren Jacobson give the Warrior defense more than it could handle with her serves as she tallied six aces in the win.
The Comets dominated in all three sets, winning by scores of 25-13, 25-9 and 25-10 as the Warriors struggled to get a cohesive offensive going.
Comet Coach Jodyn Singer was glad to see her players show up ready to fight for a regional spot.
“This was a win or go home situation for us and I thought the girls stayed focused and did their jobs well,” she said. “Standing Rock is a scrappy team, so going in we knew we couldn’t take them lightly. I thought the girls got our attack going half-way through the first set and then kept pushing ‘til the end.”
The Warriors were able to string a few points together throughout the match, tying up the first set at 11-11 before the Comets took control, rolling to the 25-13 win.
