Comet girls take two more

The Comet girls are getting a handle on tailoring their defense to combat their opponents’ offensive attack, as the Comets sat in their zone defense to turn back the Washburn Cardinals in District 10 action, then switching from man-to-man when their zone wasn’t doing enough to shut down the Bulldogs.
The Comets easily handled the home-standing Washburn team by the score of 49-22 Tuesday night. Thursday night, they had to pick things up and switch from a zone to man-to-man defense the second half of their game against Flasher to overtake the Bulldogs by the final score of 47-40.
“(Flasher) would go on a six to eight-point run, and we’d come back and score four, five, six – the second half we switched things up on defense, and that helped,” commented Underwood Coach Jared Kautzman.
They needed to make sure they could curtail the scoring of post Emma Marion and guard Joie Vandenberg.
“We went to man instead of sitting in a zone,” said Kautzman. “I didn’t want to have to go man because (Marion) is tough to match-up with, but Maria (Wirtz) played defense really well against her.”
Marion finished the game with 15 points and Vandenberg 20, as she cashed in on four treys.
