After losing a tough game in the semifinal round of the McLean County Girls Basketball Tournament, the Underwood Comets were looking to bounce back with a win in the third place game last Saturday night in Underwood. The Lady Comets got the tip and freshman Abby Landenberger drove the lane for a quick two points, but the Comets would suffer a scoring drought until the waning minutes of the first quarter when senior Alix Auck had a nice turn-around jumper. The Comets were down 13-4 with two minutes left in the first. Junior Taylor Sorensen nabbed a steal and took the ball to the hoop for two, and the quarter ended 13-6. The Comets got some early scoring in the second period with a pass from Sorensen to Auck and a bucket by senior Tami Heidelberger. Auck was able to put back an offensive rebound, but the Cossacks went on a shooting spree scoring 18 points to the Comets’ nine. After the halftime break the Comets took possession and senior Miranda Pochant banked a three-pointer from the top of the key. Max countered with a three-pointer of their own and the Comets weren’t able to gain an inch on the Cossacks. The Cossacks’ lead stretched to 20 with 3:22 left in the third. Auck and Heidelberger created a few points for the Comets but the Cossack lead stayed at 20 at the end of the third quarter.
