After finding themselves in a battle to the buzzer in the opening round, the Comets found themselves in another down-to-the-wire finish Monday night in Garrison – but this time the outcome was different.

The Comets outlasted the come-back Wilton-Wing Miners 60-58 to advance to the Region 5 tournament this coming week, making their first trip back to regionals since 2011.

The Comets started out fast Monday night, vaulting to a 16-10 lead by the end of one stanza. They let the lead dwindle the second half, but held out ‘til the final buzzer, turning back Wilton-Wing 60-58 in the regional qualifier, advancing themselves to the upcoming Region 5 tournament at Bismarck’s Legacy High School.

The Comets will take on District 9’s Solen this coming Monday at about 7:30 p.m. Solen lost to Shiloh Christian 65-41 in the District 9 title game, and is also the team the Comets faced during the 2011 regional opening round.

Opening round action saw down-to-the-wire action for the Comets, when they fell to Max by the score of 57-54. The Cossacks would eventually be knocked out of contention for the regional tournament by Garrison, losing Monday night by the score of 55-40.

Typically, having three players score in mid-double digits is a good sign and means a good shot at a win, and that was the case Monday at Garrison as Comets Zach Cottingham, Parker Heger and Nick Dammen all cashed in for double digits. Cottingham, who along with post Marshal LeRoy, was named All-District, led the scoring with 17 points. Heger tossed in four treys on his way to 15 points, and Dammen was good for 14, using the paint to find his zone.
