Comet boys ousted early in districts

The Underwood Comets fell shy of their regional tournament hopes last Friday night when the Garrison Troopers forged a fourth-quarter stand to defeat the Comets 56-43 to win the loser-out match-up of the District 10 boys’ tournament in Washburn. The loss followed a first-round loss to Washburn 47-37 Thursday night. The Comets held a slim margin through the first half of Friday’s loser-out battle, leading 24-20 at the half, and still held a slim two-point margin at the end of three as the two teams volleyed the lead back and forth. But the Troopers made a quick run about midway through the fourth quarter, spurred on by a three-pointer by Garrison’s big gun Mykle Rud, that proved to be too much for the Comets. “That was one of the very few times we lost Rud,” commented Underwood coach Steve Cottingham. That one time would prove to be one too many. “He hit that three that put them up by five, and from there we tried to get all five points back on one possession,” said Cottingham. “And now five becomes seven . . .”
