Central McLean Cougars wins catfight

By Mary Hefta

In Region 6 nine-man football action last Friday night, the Cougars from Central McLean traveled to Center to face off with the Wildcats from Center-Stanton. Junior Trevor Thomas set the pace for the entire game returning the Wildcat opening kickoff 15 yards. Senior Grant Singer took the first play from scrimmage another 60 yards, barreling into the end zone for the first touchdown of the game. Senior Sam Hultberg’s run on the two-point conversion was successful and with just 20 seconds into the game the Cougars took the lead 8-0. The Cougars took advantage of good field position after Hultberg partially blocked the next C-S punt. Singer scored his second touchdown of the game in the ensuing series. Pulling three Wildcat defenders with him, Singer bolted 15 yards to raise the Cougar lead to 14-0. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful. The Cougar defense was in full force as well, and junior Mick Finneman put some big pressure on the Wildcat offense. Singer added to his defensive stats with an interception with 6:46 remaining in the first quarter. On this offensive series Singer added 26 more yards and ran for a Cougar touchdown. The Cougars led 20-0 with 5:49 remaining in the first quarter.
