Blue Goose Day - 106 youth participate

Arrows were flying, hammers were driving and deer antlers were being sought out at the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge, Coleharbor, last Thursday evening. What was the special occasion? Blue Goose Day!
The annual event focuses on educating youth about wildlife conservation and outdoor skills. Four hands-on activity stations were set up for the children to participate in and family and friends were encouraged to "tag along."
At the "Build a Nest Box" station, participants constructed a nest box for a house wren out of pre-cut lumber and the skillful hammering of nails. Once complete, each child had a birdhouse to take home and place in his/her very own backyard.
The "Archery Range" gave youth the opportunity to shoot bows and arrows at full-body animal targets. This station saw numerous first-timers, but Refuge staff members and volunteers were patient in teaching the eager learners the ropes.
The "Air Rifle Target Shoot" station also saw a number of rookies. Participants learned how to safely handle a firearm and practice his/her target shooting skills. To give you an idea of the kids’ shooting skills...let’s just say more than one pop can exploded!
