The gist of Monday’s economic development meeting with members of Governor Doug Burgum’s main street initiative was not lost on Underwood High School senior Bo Weisenberger.
Weisenberger, along with the other members of the school’s student council and Coal Country Leadership Academy, joined other members of Underwood’s business and residential community at Underwood City Hall to discuss the issues that face Underwood and other small towns in North Dakota.
Everyone was invited to say what they think makes Underwood great, which was met with silence before city auditor Diane Schell pointed out that Underwood hosts several activities throughout the year and gets tremendous support from its business owners.
Then the audience was asked what they think would make Underwood even better.
The consensus among the students, said Weisenberger, was the desire to have a community center that would potentially house an indoor pool, a weight room, basketball courts, an arcade area and other amenities.
“I think there were a lot of good ideas to talk about, but again, it comes down to money,” said Weisenberger.
