Two ‘lodges’ proposed for Underwood

By Suzanne Werre, BHG News Service

What once was Prairieview Nursing Home may soon be an extended-stay lodge with a restaurant on site.  Monday night the Underwood City Commission was given an outline of the proposed plan for an “Underwood Lodge,” presented by the Edgewood Management Group, a privately held company based in Grand Forks. According to the special use permit submitted by Edgewood Management Group, they would turn the former nursing home building into an extended-stay lodge, its primary customers construction workers and truckers in the mining and energy industries, sportsmen, travelers, etc. There would be extensive remodeling of the rooms, renovation of the commons area into a fitness center/tv room, and the plan also includes adding more rooms to the current structure to meet a potential maximum of 60 rooms. The company would also like to add more parking spaces adjacent to the site, potentially to the west. Edgewood’s primary business is in senior housing, but it is also involved in single and multi-family developments primarily in Bismarck, hotel ownership in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota, and oil field services in the western part of the state. The permit request also indicates EMG intends to continue to offer the clinic building to the existing tenant.
