Title curse is over

The Underwood Comets ended a 32-year drought Monday night, winning the boys district basketball tournament for the first time since 1987. At least that’s the best recollection anybody has been able to come up with – as several locals said the last time the Comets won the district title was in 1987.
One of the fans after Monday night’s 63-59 win over Wilton-Wing said “two curses were broken” with the Comets’ tournament victories. It was the first time since 2002 that Underwood had defeated Turtle Lake at all, and 32 years since they won the tournament.
Underwood senior Travis Reinbold picked the right time to have a stellar night from the field as the 6-1 forward scored 27 points for the game-high scorer, scoring 12 of his points the second quarter and knocking down six of eight of his shots at the charity stripe.
Wilton-Wing’s last lead of the game came early in the fourth stanza as the Miners led 39-38 with 7:32 remaining in the game.
Underwood junior guard Ty Snyder stepped up to the free throw line to hit the back end of a one-and-one from the charity stripe, tying the game at 39, and he followed up with a coast-to-coast bucket with 6:20 remaining in the game to give the Comets a 41-39 lead that they would never relinquish.
The Miners would get to within one point with 3:35 left on the clock when Reed Backman tossed in a three-pointer, but Snyder answered quickly with a jumper from the lane to give the Comets the three-point 49-46 lead.
