The air up there

Carter Johnson has his head in the clouds.
While other kids his age are lacing up their basketball shoes and football cleats for sports camps, Underwood eighth-grader Carter Johnson recently attended an aerospace camp at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.
Johnson received some hands-on experience in the aerospace field by visiting the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences on the UND campus, where he learned about many aspects of the principles of flight and aerospace science, as well as air traffic control. All of it in preparation for a few years down the road when he plans to go back to UND to get his pilot’s license.
His grandpa, Tom Nostdahl, used to have his own plane, and Carter picked up his love of flying from him.
“I spend a lot of time with my grandpa, and he used to be a pilot. It’s slowly grown on me and I’ve grown more and more into aeronautics and planes, and I figured this would be a good way to learn more about aeronautics,” said Johnson.
At not-quite-15, he’ll have to wait at least a year before he can really start learning how to fly, but the camp at UND only confirmed his interest in flying.
