Stella Brokaw is a curious, articulate, and charming 6th grader at Underwood School. She’s also a dedicated bookworm. Last year she
received 370 points in the accelerated reading program, earning her the top spot in the yearlong competition. Students read books and
then complete quizzes online regarding the content. Different books have different points depending on length and difficulty. She especially enjoyed reading Harry Potter, Nevermore, and The Trials of Morgan Crow, a Tale of Magic. “I like reading because I can block out everything else. I go into my own world,” Stella said. But Stella’s story doesn’t live in the library. Stella’s mother, Kate, who has battled cancer, decided to move back to North Dakota from Arizona last year. Stella says she has found a new community of friends and dedicated teachers in Underwood. “We are very grateful for the community she has found here,” Kate said.
