Status quo for student numbers

There is still no huge influx of children coming into the Underwood School system along with the increase of oil rigs in the county, as following last week’s registration, there should be 205 children attending Underwood School in grades kindergarten through 12.
Supt. Brandt Dick updated the school board members of the registration numbers at Friday’s regular board meeting, also updating them on other school issues.
The fewest students will be in the kindergarten class, where nine are registered, while the sophomore class has the most students at 23.
Not included in those numbers is the preschool class, which is full. Those numbers could tell a story about the future of the school’s class sizes.
"Our preschool class is full," said Dick. "We have between 40 and 45 kids in our preschool, so we would anticipate that we’re going to see some growth in the coming years."
The board will be holding a community meeting Monday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m., where Dick will be explaining the tax hike tax payers can expect for the coming year, as the school tries to "catch up" after missing out on tax dollars for the buildings and grounds and special reserve funds, due to a clerical error when the school’s tax money requests were submitted to the county.
