Starting a fire, fanning the flames of learning

Turtle Lake-Mercer school’s fifth graders had the chance to make some memories this past week, as they traveled to Lake Metigoshe State Park and its learning center for a field trip.
This is the second year fifth-grade teacher Kurt Ziebarth has taken his students up to Lake Metigoshe, where they take part in several different activities. They had planned on going canoeing, but it was too windy, noted Ziebarth, but they did plenty of other fun things, including archery and fire-starting.
“This year the big highlight for the kids was archery,” said Ziebarth.
He was a little surprised at how well the girls on the trip took to the new sport.
“They really like that. I think the girls even enjoyed it more than the boys,” said Ziebarth.
They students also took part in some sensory exercises, one in particular where they cupped their hands around their ears so they could get an idea of how animals turn their ears to hear what else is out and about in their surroundings.
“And we practiced trying out our sense of smell, and they did some stuff with touch, and toward the end they worked on night vision,” said Ziebarth.
