The Underwood City Commission is hoping somebody or even more than one somebody will step up and volunteer to be appointed to the Underwood City Commission for the next six months or so, following the resignation of long-time commissioner Jay Snyder at Wednesday’s monthly meeting.
Citing “health reasons,” Snyder resigned his position from the commission in a letter given to commission president Leon Weisenburger. Snyder did not attend Wednesday’s meeting.
The public has 15 days to submit a petition to have a special election, noted City Auditor Diane Schell. However, she noted, if a special election were to be held, it would end up being about a week before the regularly-scheduled election this June.
The better avenue, agreed the commissioners, would be to have someone appointed by the commission to fill the unexpired term now, which would give that person about six months to be in office. At that time, the person could run for re-election, or not – but it would give them a taste of what being a commissioner is like without making the four-year commitment.
“I would be in favor of soliciting resumes from everybody interested in appointment to the vacant seat,” said Commissioner Patti Werre, who said the commission would be better off having someone who is actually interested in being on the commission take the spot for six months, rather than just elect someone new. That six months in the chair would give someone insight into what being a commissioner is really like, and he or she could decide whether or not to run for the full term.
