Small group gives new look to main street

It’s said that a small group of people has the power to change the world. Indeed it’s the only thing that does. On Thursday night, Underwood held their first Beautification Night of the year, focusing the effort on the Sophia’s Fancies building on Lincoln Avenue. Six locals showed up to support the beautification effort armed with paint scrapers and brushes, ready to paint over chipped, discolored and less than appealing coats of blue and white. Within just about three hours, the entire front of the building had a new look with gray and red replacing the old colors. “Wow, it looks good, guys,” was Underwood Economic Development Director Becky Bowen’s response at the sight of the transformation. Bowen said the reason for painting the building is more than just an effort to beautify the town. With the Midsummer Classic coming July 16, she and others want the town looking its best for the crowds that should number in the hundreds. It’s also another step in getting people thinking about the effort to “Bring Back the Rose,” a plan of Bowen’s to refurbish and restart the movie theater in town.
