School enrollment numbers up
There was a mix of good news and bad news at the Underwood School this week as schools in McLean County opened for the 2020-21 school year.
Underwood, which is going with on-site learning and anoption of distance learning through the Central Regional Educational Association, is going into the school year with an increase of 20 students this fall, with 14 students opting to do distance learning.
Turtle Lake-Mercer has the same number of students at the start of this school year as it ended up with in the spring of 2020, noted Supt. Sheila Schlafmann, with 16 juniors and seniors making up the school’s largest classes.
“We are pretty much right on what we had last year,” said Schlafmann, noting there are 179 students Pre-K through
12 registered for this school year, four of them opting for distance learning. “We thought we would be down, but we have a lot of new families.”
Underwood, too, has several new families in town, but the senior class didn’t get any new students. The are three students in the UHS senior class, making it the smallest class in the school, while Turtle Lake-Mercer’s pre-K
