The Turtle Lake-Mercer school board adopted a policy that clarifies the process to review curriculum as it relates to critical race theory. Teaching critical race theory is banned in North Dakota.

The policy states that if a parent or concerned party believes critical race theory curriculum is being taught at the school, the school must make the curriculum available to be reviewed by the requestor.

The policy also reiterates the procedure in which a parent can request curriculum, which includes completing a “request to view” form. The requestor can view the material at the district office within 30 days of completing the form, according to the policy.

In November 2021, Doug Burgum codified the state’s ban on teaching critical race theory after signing a bill strongly supported in both the house and senate.
