School adding elementary teacher, boys hoops coach

The Underwood School Board made quick work of its items on the agenda last Thursday night, quickly moving on to its meeting with McClusky and Turtle Lake board members to discuss the sports co-ops. The Underwood board will likely be placing an ad soon that reads something like “Wanted: Elementary school teacher; basketball coaching a plus” as they determined the school will need to add one elementary teacher to the teaching staff, and at the same meeting accepted the resignation from Kyle Hunt from the boys’ basketball head coaching position, who resigned to be able to spend more time with his family. Ideally, the teaching and coaching positions would be able to be filled by the same person, said Superintendent Brandt Dick, but it will depend on the applicants. Which class will be getting the new teacher, which is the second open elementary teaching position open following the resignation of Cathy Sheldon, will be decided later this spring. Contracts have been issued to the current staff. In going through committee reports, the board was informed that the school’s budget looks to be in pretty good shape by the finance committee. The board approved cutting into some of the budget’s funds, approving the purchase of a new lawn mower for the school, and also approving the purchase of a bus regardless of whether the school gets a clean diesel grant. Dick noted that even if the school does not qualify for the grant, there is still a need for a route bus. The board was also updated on this past winter’s sports, an upcoming summer sewing class that will be held at the school, and given an update on the MREC (Missouri River Educational Cooperative). The board also approved the second reading of the school’s new bullying policy.
