Rounded-up bison ready for sale
By Alyssa Schafer
It was run, run, run, for the bison who live on Cross Ranch Nature Preserve last week. But after a bit of a chase and some sorting, Nature Conservancy staff had the bison rounded up and ready for sale. Bison are extremely intelligent and work together well as a group, so rounding them up can sometimes be a challenge, said Nature Conservancy Field Steward Chris Gordon. "It’s unbelievable to see how they work," Gordon said. "It’s almost as if you’re sitting on top of a hill planning, and they’re sitting on the opposite hill doing the exact same thing." Cross Ranch Preserve Manager Eric Rosenquist said he appreciates the assistance neighboring landowners provided during this year’s roundup. About 15 area volunteers helped round up the bison using dirt bikes, ATVs and horses. They also received some help from Cross Ranch State Park employees. Park manager Eric Lang and interpreter Laura Kohn helped round up and sort the animals.
