Prepare for winter weather driving

Extreme cold, freezing rain, snow, dangerous wind chills. Those are all things we’ve grown accustomed to in North Dakota. Throw in a few thousand new drivers to the area and you have a recipe for some dangerous driving situations this winter season. In one of the first winter weather episodes of the season last week, numerous vehicles veered off roadways due to icy conditions. It’s a reminder of how quickly conditions can change when the temperature drops. Local and state agencies are getting the word out early to get people to be cautious this winter season. Governor Jack Dalrymple even proclaimed Oct. 29 through Nov. 2 Severe Winter Weather Awareness Week. To help you prepare, groups like the North Dakota Department of Transportation, the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services, state patrol, game and fish and National Weather Service are working together to provide you all the information you can handle on the National Weather Service Web site (http://www.crh.noaa.gov/bis/). Outlined on the site are newsworthy notes for each day of the week. That includes ways to navigate the page, how to safely travel this winter and how to look for indoor dangers as well as outdoor dangers during the winter season.
