Pick a project for Beautification Day
By Brenda L. Shelkey
The temperatures are warming, and the snow is beginning to melt. Spring is in the air and Underwood is planning a Beautification Day for Saturday, May 2 when people will have the option to help out with any or all of the four projects planned to reflect the family friendly, welcoming atmosphere of Underwood. The first project entails work on the Underwood sign welcoming people to the town. UAEDC Specialist, Becky Bowen said, "The Underwood lettering is meant to stand out and let people driving down Highway 83 know that we are here and we are inviting them to stop." The three-and-a-half foot aluminum letters will be lit at night to continue the welcome. To lay the groundwork for the lettering, workers are needed to build a three foot high landscape-block wall to hold the lettering. Bowen or citizen chairperson, Amanda Haseleu, won’t turn down an offer to donate the cost of the landscaping block either. Once the wall is completed, workers can volunteer to help install the steel frame construction made by Mandan Steel Fabricators which will hold the new three-and-a-half foot aluminum letters that spell Underwood. The lighting will be installed and workers can help with landscaping the native plantings to finish off the welcoming effects. The second big project is to create a tree and shrub corridor along the quarter-mile stretch along the Highway 83 Bypass loop between Highway 83 and Lincoln Avenue and along Lincoln Avenue into the downtown area.
