More housing priority of steering committee

The consensus of those attending Wednesday’s comprehensive plan steering committee meeting with SRF Consulting’s Scott Harmstead is that Turtle Lake has a lot to offer young families, except for maybe adequate family housing, pointing at residential property development as a key cog in Turtle Lake’s improvement plan.
It’s tough to find anybody willing to sell any land for an affordable price, inside the city limits or outside, noted those attending the meeting. The city’s comprehensive plan project is funded through a grant from the North Dakota Department of Commerce, and includes not only meetings with local community leaders but a survey that is being distributed to local residents.
“The biggest challenge is trying to get people to sell,” said attendee Linda Huelsman.
Harmstead showed three maps of Turtle Lake and the surrounding area, each one delineating different areas of potential growth or change in potential residential and industrial areas.
At a meeting at the Turtle Lake Senior Center set for Monday, Oct. 28, local residents will be invited to give their own input in what they would like to see in Turtle Lake, and where they would like to see it.
There are some vacant lots in town, but typically they’re not really big enough for a family home.
