Discussion over the suggestion to expand the existing sports to include all sports in the three schools: Underwood, Turtle Lake and McClusky, filled the largest portion of this item on the December 17 school board agenda. After considerations of the current whole school enrollments, the trends indicated by future enrollment projections and the various costs to the schools in both time and money, the Turtle Lake-Mercer school board members unanimously approved the motion to not create a new co-op now.
One board member stated that the kids like playing against their co-op buddies in other non-co-op sports and that it wasn’t all about winning.
Certain sports, such as football, have seen a drop in participation over the last few years. Equal playing time for participants was one issue as well as pulling up kids from lower grades to fill vacancies on higher-level teams.
One board member stated that he had told his child that if he moved up, he had to drop participation at the lower level, not to do both.
Key issues of damage, clean up and fees for the use of the Community Center were discussed. The fee per use will be $100, with $50 back if condition of the facility is okayed. The contract will be changed to reflect the approved items
The contract change will indicate that if any damage occurs from a school activity use, the school district will repair such damages, other than normal wear and tear of the facility.
