Shots rang out from the hallway. The 6th grade teacher at Turtle Lake-Mercer School protected the classroom with a door jam while telling students to stay calm. It was just a drill. During the debriefing meeting held after the active shooter drill held May 18, Turtle Lake school officials realized they needed more door jams. “If you have it, it’s right there,” Sheila Schlafmann, Superintendent of Turtle Lake-Mercer school said. “They are easy to use, it’s a quick easy grab. After a classroom used it during the active shooter drill, we wanted to have them for every room.” Noelle Kroll, Director of Disaster Emergency Services for McLean County, secured additional door jams for Turtle Lake-Mercer school from the Homeland Security Grant Program (SHSP). In 2022, McLean County was awarded $27,923 from the program.
