Making a difference a world away

Some student teachers make a point of trying to student teach at the school from which they graduated. Underwood graduate Alexis Longtin decided she wanted to go a different route.
The 2009 Underwood graduate will be graduating from the Minnesota State University Moorhead in December with an elementary-inclusive education degree and licensure in special education for children with emotional, behavioral disorders and learning disabilities.
Currently, though, she is doing her student teaching in South Africa on the Eastern Cape of Africa.
This is the second time Alexis has been to Africa. She and two of her cousins volunteered in Ghana in June 2011.
While the original idea was that this would be a story written by the editor, it became evident while reading Alexis’ answers, that it is much better coming directly from her perspective, rather than as a story written by a by-stander. The questions she was asked will be followed by her answers.
