While no decision has been made on the future of Great River Energy’s Coal Creek Station, one company representative has assured residents the economically
challenged plant has at least two more years of operating ahead. Communication Specialist Anne Hansen told attendees of this month’s Underwood Civic
Club meeting that the plant has contracts with operators through May of 2021, with plans to renew for at least another year. “Worst case scenario, we have until at least May of
202+2, one way or another,” Hansen said at the Feb. 5 meeting. Hansen said GRE officials were weighing options for the plant, which is facing financial stress that she said
is plaguing the nation’s coal plants.
