‘Safe Routes’ sidewalks will be installed

By Michael Johnson, Editor

The Underwood City Commissioners agreed to go ahead with the construction of sidewalks in town with the help of a $196,000 grant following what was one of the largest turnouts for a community meeting in recent history. The meeting, held last Tuesday night, brought over 50 people, that were either for or against the “Safe Routes to Schools” project, together to share all sides of the situation. The Safe Routes to Schools proposal was brought forth by Underwood economic developer Becky Bowen several months ago. The project was to add sidewalks along portions of Summit, Roosevelt, Borchardt and Lincoln. After much discussion, it appeared that the majority of the crowd was in favor of new sidewalks but the route of the sidewalk would likely change in order to be most beneficial to the students traveling to school. Dave Thompson of Toman Engineering officiated the meeting by explaining the route and listening to any ideas that residents had.
