‘Identity,’ travel stumbling blocks for proposed co-op

Members of the Underwood, Turtle Lake-Mercer and McClusky school boards, administration, and co-op committees met Monday afternoon in Underwood to go over the most recent proposal in the sports cooperative agreement, and iron out the potential co-op agreement which would add volleyball, basketball (boys and girls), as well as junior high volleyball into the already established Central McLean Cougars athletic co-op.
Volleyball would not be added until after next season, but if approved by the school boards in February, the basketball teams would be co-oping next season.
Schools must notify the North Dakota High School Activities Association of their intent to co-op for the next season before the current season is up to avoid a penalty.
Each of the schools have held informational meetings with the public with several patrons of the schools voicing their opinions at their respective meetings.
The meeting between TurtleLake-Mercer school board members and its patrons became contentious at times, with a very vocal group of patrons saying they were definitely not in favor of the co-op, and that the board moving ahead with it was not what the community wanted.
