The Underwood Comettes are undergoing a proverbial “rebuilding year” as they move into 2019’s dance and competition season, with new dancers and a new coach.
Anna Liu has taken over the helm of the varsity dance team in Underwood, replacing long-time coach Suzanne Werre who retired after 25+ years, bringing a five-member team led by two sophomores to this year’s dance floor.
Liu has a degree in dance performance from Beijing Sport University in Beijing, China, and she’s confident she will be able to up the Comettes’ skill level to be able to compete with the best Class B teams in the state. But it won’t happen immediately, she noted. Like every other sport, it will take practice and a lot of work.
Her foci while at university were ballet, jazz and hip-hop, with just a little bit of pom, but she can teach anything, she noted – and she loves all of them. She hopes the dancers realize what they love about dance, and bring that to the dance floor.
“My goals – First I want to share all of my experience with the girls and I want to take this time to help them as much as I can. I want to let them find what is their passion, to know why she is here and why she loves dance” said Liu.
She hopes their love of dance grows, with the goal of them wanting to continue dancing even after high school.
