K-9 visit yields hit, nothing else

Someone trying to get into the Underwood school for awhile March 24 would have been turned away as the school underwent a lock-down to allow drug dogs (K-9s) to do a sweep of the school. A McLean County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit car sat outside the school as the dog and deputy walked through the school and searched.
The school does walk-throughs of the school building and parking lot intermittently throughout the school year, noted Sam Lincoln, a K-9 handler with the McLean County Sheriff’s Department. The department may act on a tip, may come upon a request of administration, or may just do a surprise drop-in walk-through. Most often, the time for a walk-through is arranged ahead of time with administration.
"If (the school) gets some intelligence that something’s going on, they’ll call us and request a dog," said Lincoln. Sometimes it’s just the sheriff’s department making the call to do a drug walk-through.
"We try to go to the schools a few times a school year, and it’s up to them . . . they can call us whenever they feel it’s necessary."
In this case, noted secondary principal, Lee Weisgarber, K-9 handler JR Kerzmann called the school and offered to make a walk-through that day.
