It’s official – no additions to Cougar sports co-op

After months of discussion and debate, the Turtle Lake-Mercer School board is officially saying it is not interested in expanding the current Central McLean co-op to include basketball and volleyball.
After opting to get the current enrollment and participation numbers of all three schools involved in the current co-op before making a decision, the Turtle Lake-Mercer board members felt overwhelmingly that the numbers indicate Turtle Lake-Mercer does not feel the need to co-op in any additional sports, voting unanimously not to add to the co-op.
In opening up discussion on the subject, School Board President Brent Christensen noted that while the numbers are lower in the junior high grades, the rest of the numbers indicate TL-M and McClusky should be able to field teams of their own without the need for more athletes from Underwood.
“What we’re seeing is that numbers go up,” said Christensen as the board started discussing the issue at their Wednesday meeting. Except for the seventh and eighth grades, he noted.
“The challenging part will be junior high girls. Having one team in junior high could be doable,” he added.
