Underwood’s newest city commission was at the last meeting for another reason, not expecting to be a new addition to the city governing board.
In last Monday’s marathon meeting, Underwood’s Amanda Haseleu was appointed by the Underwood City Commission to fulfill the unexpired term recently left vacant by the resignation of Ethan Vaagene.
Three residents who had expressed interest in the position were at the meeting -- Mike Erickson, who was on the ballot and received 38 votes; Jeff Taylor, who was also on the ballot and received 37 votes; and Joe Fleischman who had forged a write-in campaign for the commission president spot.
At the previous commission meeting, July 11, Fleischman had presented a written request to be considered for the vacant spot left by Vaagene, but the commissioners took no action on his request, opting to take a week before appointing someone to the spot.
At the July 18 meeting, Commissioner Patti Werre nominated Taylor, but the nomination died due to no second of the nomination.
