Gaining by giving: Delivering baskets of smiles
Cathy Clark, Underwood, has a smile on her face, a sparkle in her eye and that energy everyone wishes they had. And she uses that energy to deliver smiles in the form of gift baskets throughout the entire region. Cathy teaches Title I reading and math for kindergarten through sixth grade at Washburn Elementary School. About five years ago, the former Hazen resident began creating occasional gift baskets for the birthdays and anniversaries of loved ones. She treasured the smiles those baskets brought. “It’s been a blessing for me, so that’s why I do them,” Cathy said. Only in the past year, however, has she come to fully, truly take note of those smiles, and how much those smiles meant to her. On Aug. 9. 2007, only a few days before the start of the Washburn school year, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
