Fewer hungry children – that’s the goal of the Community Cupboard of Underwood’s new backpack program.
Starting in February, the Community Cupboard will be sending food kits home in the backpacks of 16 local children, giving their families a little bridge to help them get through the weekend.
The Cupboard applied for funding from the United Way a while ago, noted Community Cupboard Director Harmony Higbie, and the food pantry was recently notified that the United Way will be funding the backpack program for 16 children.
The Cupboard had hoped to get funding for 20, but 16 is a good start.
“There is a need there,” said Higbie, who noted that the Underwood School currently has 37 students who qualify for either free or reduced meals.
