County commissioners hear Corps update
By Brenda L. Shelkey, BHG News Service Those living and farming around Lake Sakakawea have been asking questions about the survey work being completed around the lake. Who are they? What are they doing? Do they have the right to put up a fence or close off a road? At Tuesday’s county commission meeting, some of those questions were answered. Phil Brown and Tim Kolke, employees of the Corps of Engineers, were on tap to update commissioners about what has been going on the last few months and answer any questions the commissioners had. Kolke told commissioners, "We have been working on the funding to completely survey the Corps of Engineers land around Lake Sakakawea. This year we received the funding, and hired a legal, professional surveyor to establish a true boundary." Once the correct boundary is established, Kolke told commissioners, they have worked to properly fence the area along the boundary. He said, "The fence line is meant to establish true government property." In addition to completing the survey work and fencing the Corps property, Corps members have spent the last few years doing a letter campaign to let landowners know that they have some say in the process.
