Commission narrows down street plan

Underwood’s city commissioners are trying to keep costs in line as they look at making some street repairs this summer, not even discussing the two most pricey options for the potential project.
Harvey Schneider and Abe Ulmer of Toman Engineering presented their evaluation and recommendations of the proposed street improvement plan, with Schneider noting that the preliminary costs are based on other projects that have recently been done in the area.
Ulmer, who drove and walked the city’s streets and took core samples during his examination, said the good news is that there is not a lot of "alligator cracking" or potholes in Underwood. Some of the streets are in very good shape, while there are some that are in pretty poor condition, he added.
He presented different recommendations, each with different levels for reconstruction, mill and overlay, or level patch and seal, Options #4 through #1.
Based on cost estimates, commissioners did not discuss the first two recommendations which rang in at just over $4.7 million and $3.4 million.
