Come for the food; stay for the fun

The carpet at St. Bonaventure’s Catholic Church has done pretty well for the past 20 some years, but it’s time to hold another fundraiser chicken supper so the church can replace it.

That’s not quite the scenario for this Sunday’s annual chicken dinner at St. Bonaventure, it’s just a little coincidental that the reason the Altar Society put on its first fundraiser in 1990 was because the church needed to raise money for new carpet, and the church just happens to be in need of new carpet again, said one of the event’s organizers, Gail Leidholm, so this year’s fundraiser will go toward that purchase.

Since 1990 the families of St. Bonaventure’s Catholic Church in Underwood have been rolling up their sleeves to serve up piping hot meals of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy and salads to their friends, families, and even strangers who come through the door after hearing about the event. And when their sleeves aren’t rolled up to help serve the meals, they’re shaking hands with the folks they meet at the door.

"It’s a fun get-together at the church," said Leidholm, regarding why the chicken supper has been such a success for so many years. It’s one of the annual small town events that doesn’t seem to be on the verge of shutting down because of lack of participation or volunteers.

"You just have fun," reiterated Leidholm. "Everybody is visiting with everybody . . . you see people you haven’t seen in awhile."
