City approves EDC budget

The Underwood City Commission approved the Underwood Area Economic Development Corporation’s (EDC) alternate budget request of $55,557 Monday night, after the original request of $73,807 was questioned at the last regular commission meeting. (See sidebar story regarding recent meeting between commissioners and EDC members).
Commissioner Jim Bailey noted that he had found a building the group could use, where economic developer Tyler Demars could work, in town for $200 a month, plus utilities – the front of the Underwood Storage building, he said.
"We’ve got something to go look at," said commissioner Olson.
Snyder said that he thought that at last week’s joint meeting, auditor Diane Schell knew more about the city’s current economic development than economic developer Tyler Demars did, and she’s a volunteer on the EDC board, while the company Demars works for, Main Street Enterprises, is getting paid $36,000 per year for Demars’ services.
Commissioners also discussed the Main Street Program , with is a 50/50 grant program available through the EDC, which is intended to help businesses spruce up their storefronts, but has also been used to help some businesses with their interiors.
