Church youth raising funds for Belize trip

Mercer Baptist Church minister Ed Gullett is trying to hit home with his church youth a mantra he understands and lives by – the church is not a building – it’s a people.
Gullet and a group of local youths will be traveling to Orange Walk, Belize, in Central America this July 15-22 where they will be working on construction of the Freedom Baptist Church in Orange Walk, as well as visiting the local schools and hospital.
“They’re going to appreciate things a lot more once they come back because of all of the things we have planned,” said Gullett.
The church the youth members will be helping with construction on is the church where Gullett ministered when he and his wife Jamilaih lived in Belize.
The youth have already been putting on fundraisers to help them cover the costs of going to Belize – most recently selling Butter Braid Bread and putting on a spaghetti feed -- and they’re planning more fundraisers well into the summer, as they hope to raise between $10,000 and $12,000 dollars.
“That should pay for the lodging and airfare, and we want to be able to pay for all the materials when we’re down there for the projects, and we’re hoping to give the church a gift as well,” said Gullett.
