Chief Ironside to cross Highway 200

By Alyssa Schafer, Editor

Last week Falkirk Mine’s large dragline took a slow and steady walk across U.S. Highway 83. Next week, Chief Ironside will move north across N.D. Highway 200, causing traffic to be temporarily detoured again. Mine land agent Doug Stoltz said he expects the move across Highway 200 to be a bit quicker than the Highway 83 crossing, which was completed ahead of schedule in under 24 hours, despite inclement weather conditions. During that crossing, Highway 83 was closed between Washburn and Underwood from the morning of Jan. 26 to 27, so Chief Ironside and two smaller pieces of equipment could cross from the west side of the highway to the east side. Traffic was detoured on highways N.D. 200 and 200A. Next week, the 13.5-million pound dragline Chief Ironside will move north across Highway 200 in order to reach the mine’s permit area. "Hopefully, it will all be done in one day," Stoltz said.
